Jun. 2nd, 2006 02:37 pmAnd just when i thought i was going to get a night (ok, day) of sleep...
The phone tech showed up about half an hour ago. He ran some tests, talked with my mother, then ended up waking me up so i'd show him how i ran the tests on the line inside. He claims that there is a short on the line inside our house, so he can't fix the problem as long as that problem is there.
So i ended up rewiring a part of the whole house while he was there just so he could finish testing things. It's somewhat of a good thing, since some of it had to be done, but well, i would have preferred to sleep.
Anyway, the result of this is, he came on a sunny day so "there's no problem to be found on your line, except the ones indoor". But now, he approved my rewiring, there is ONE SINGLE cable leading from the lines outside to my ADSL modem, so next time it goes out, i just pull all other wires from the phoneline connection box, leaving only the modem, and they can't say it's the other phone cables or blah.
And after playing with the cable on the outside, even if he denied it, i'm sure it's the problem. The thing is so old the wire was falling apart while i was trying to reconnect the internal wiring to it. I mean, it apparently is over 40 years old, and the plastic is so dry it can't even be bent without breaking.
But the guy's testing machine told him "Indoor wiring fault" and "outdoor line ok", and he isn't authorised to use or try anything else, including common sense.
So i guess it's blah, i'll have to call them again next time and do it all over again...
And yes, i'm sure it wasn't the wiring fault they found that was really the problem. First, it was affected by the weather and wind, and second, i had tried disconnecting the wires and hooking a phone straight to the outside line back a while ago, when it was messing up.
Oh, two other things.
Yes, the server did go down while we were messing with the lines. It is back up now, should be stable.
Second, working when your reflexes are crap and strength is gone sucks. I can't count how many times my screwdrivers and pliers just because my hand stopped being closed, and actually slapped it all the way across the room while trying to catch it.
