Jun. 23rd, 2005 01:56 pmYesterday was apparently a day of DOOOM! for my hardware.
First, for unexplained reasons, after the site of one of the people i'm hosting got hacked (probably just someone found out their password), the whole thing went unstable. Apache, VNC, MySQL and various other programs kept crashing and restarting without an explanation on pyxaron.ath.cx.
There's also pyxnet.ath.cx that started having various other problems. Video card going weird and making all kinds of odd line patterns appear in the screen, then the system dropping the network connection for unexplained reasons, then rebooting and freezing at the POST.
Then my backup gateway started shutting down too, and refused to reboot.
And finally, around midnight yesterday, pyxaron.ath.cx suddently shut down and didn't come back up. I kinda panicked and tried unplugging and swapping parts. I got it to boot once, with the keyboard removed, but it took forever and once in windows, it gave memory errors for pretty much everything.
So i ended up having to rebuild another computer to use as server, and finally got the thing back up around 1am. It's now running on a processor half as fast, and with 1/3 of the memory.
For the people who might wonder why i didn't just use another of my systems i had running, it's because windows 2000/XP are stupid, and won't boot if the drive controller is different. So i had to find another board with a SIS chipset, or i couldn't get it to boot.
Pyxnet.ath.cx seem to have gone back up, and is my primary gateway, so my net access is relatively stable.
But still, it's really annoying. I don't have the money to fix all that now. I guess this means i'll have to hurry up with transfering to pyxnet.com and pyxaron.com, since they're the only two that stayed up.
And now i'm at work. I'm really happy to know we close tomorrow...
